Senators ‘proud of the armed forces’

The senate on Tuesday commended the Nigerian military for its efforts in the war against Boko Haram.

Raising a point of order, Maina Ma’aji Lawan (Borno north), pointed out that there was a need for the senators to commend the military for the recent successes recorded‎ in the war against insurgency in the northeast.

Lawan explained that the Nigerian military had retaken a large swaths of land in the northeast, including his home town Baga, from Boko Haram, adding that the people of the region were glad about the development.

“We are solidly behind our troops and we are ready to cooperate with them to ensure that no part of the northeast is under Boko Haram,” he said.

Also lending his voice to the call for a commendation of the military, Bukar Abba Ibrahim (Yobe east) stated that except for Bama and Gwoza, there was no town in the northeast under the control of Boko Haram.

He also commended the regional force comprising troops from Niger, Chad and Cameroon for cooperating with the Nigerian military‎.

Commending the military, Ali Ndume (Borno south) said that the northeast was now a different place against its previous state in the hands of Boko Haram militants.

“As a barracks boy, I’m proud of the Nigeria armed forces,” he said.

David Mark, the senate president, commended the military for its gallantry, saying it had proved that with “the right platform”, it could‎ deliver results.

“As we commend our boys, we must encourage them to bring the insurgency in the northeast to quick conclusion‎,” he said.
