Serena Williams has reached her 10th US Open women’s singles final, the most in the “Open Era”.
Williams saw off fifth seed Elina Svitolina in a two straight set — 6-3, 6-1 — to clinch her 101st career victory at the Arthur Ashe stadium in the early hours of Friday morning.
With the victory over the world No. 5, she broke the record held by Venus Williams, her sister, for the biggest gap between first and most recent appearances in a slam final – 19 years and 362 days.
“I don’t think about the numbers,” she said.
“I just come out here and do as well as I can. Been here for 20 years – and still here.
The opportunity of claiming her 24th career Grand Slam women’s singles title beckons on Saturday.
Williams will be placed on tie with Margret Court’s record if she pulled that off on Saturday against Canada’s Bianca Andreescu.
If she wins, it will be her 33rd Grand Slam final overall.
She will also break two significant all-time records that she currently shares with Chris Evert – six US Open women’s singles title.
“It’s just impressive,” Williams said, reflecting on the 101st win.
“To be in any club with Chrissie is just awesome.”
That means her seventh US Open women’s singles crown.
