Serena Williams’ bid to become the first player since Steffi Graf in 1988 to sweep all the Grand Slam tournaments in a single season ended on Friday at the U.S. Open semi-finals.
She ran into a determined unseeded player from Italy, Roberta Vinci, who took down Williams in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The 32-year-old Italian had never made it to a Grand Slam semi-final in her career and is ranked 43rd in the world.
In Saturday’s final, Vinci will face 26th-ranked compatriot Flavia Pennetta, who upset Romanian second seed Simona Halep 6-1, 6-3 in the other semi-final.
