Seven dead in Taraba after displaying cholera symptoms

Seven residents of Tella town in Gassol LGA of Taraba have been confirmed dead after displaying symptoms of cholera.

Innocent Vakkai, Taraba commissioner for health, confirmed the development on Monday.

Vakkai added that several other persons are currently on hospital admission, adding that the victims had had severe stooling and vomiting.

He also said health workers have been sent to the LGA to investigate the incident.

Also confirming the development, Musa Chul, chairman of Gassol local government council, in an interview with NAN, said 25 residents are on admission at the Tella maternity clinic after exhibiting symptoms of cholera.

According to Chul, he had received a report from Tella area on Saturday that three people had died after vomiting and stooling.

He added that as of Sunday morning, a health team from the local government council was despatched to the town to investigate the incident.

The chairman said before the arrival of the local government medical team, four other residents were also said to have lost their lives on Sunday, after severe vomiting and stooling.

Chul added that the worst-hit area with infections is Unguwan Kabawa, a suburb of Tella, where the initial cases were reported on Saturday evening.

He also said the situation had been reported to the state ministry of health for further action.

The Gassol LGA chairman, however, advised residents to maintain clean surroundings to prevent further infections.
