Shehu Shagari, second republican president of Nigeria, has cleared the air on the rumour of his death, calling for a peaceful conduct of the forthcoming general election.
Shagari, who spoke at his residence in Sokoto on Monday, said it was important to shun violence.
“Nobody should sponsor or perpetrate violence as the country belongs to all of us,” he said.
“Politicians in the country should strive hard for a united Nigeria and refrain from doing anything that will destroy the country.”

On Sunday, the rumour mill was agog with the news that the elderstatesman had passed on, but TheCable reported that he was “hale and hearty and on his farm at the time the death reports were circulating.
