Sharia court orders police to probe suspended Jigawa commissioner over ‘affair with married woman’

Auwal Sankara

A Kano state upper Shari’a court has ordered the assistant inspector-general of police, zone 1, to investigate Auwalu Sankara, the suspended Jigawa state commissioner for special duties, over allegations of having an illicit affair with a married woman.

Sankara is facing charges alongside Tasleem Nabegu, the woman in question.

Ibrahim Yola, the presiding judge, gave the order on Tuesday following a direct complaint filed by Nasir Buba, husband of the woman, the first defendant in the suit.

Buba prayed the court to order the police to investigate the alleged relationship between his wife and Sankara.

Haruna Magashi, counsel to the complainant, holding a brief for Sa’id Muhammad Tudun Wada, told the court that there is overwhelming evidence to prove the allegation against the two defendants, including video clips, pictures, phone conversations, and the transfer of funds between them.

In his submission, Rabi’u Abdullahi, counsel to the woman, dismissed all the allegations against his client.

Abdullahi told the court that the couple had been separated for over a year, citing allegations of repeated mistreatment and abuse during their time together.

Also, in his submission, Aliyu Hajji, the counsel to the suspended commissioner, alleged that the complainant politically made up the issue to tarnish the image of his client.

The Kano state Hisbah board declared Sankara wanted on Monday.

Hisbah arrested Sankara after Buba reported that the suspended commissioner was engaging in an illicit affair with his wife.

Amid the controversy, Umar Namadi, governor of Jigawa, suspended Sankara over the alleged affair.

Namadi said the suspension was a precautionary measure to facilitate a fair investigation.

The commissioner has since dismissed the allegations as “false, malicious, and baseless.”

Sankara vowed to take legal action against those behind the allegations, adding that they aimed to damage his reputation.
