Sharon Ikeazor joins leadership council of Elephant Protection Initiative

Sharon Ikeazor, minister of state for Niger Delta Affairs, has been appointed to the leadership council of the Elephant Protection Initiative (EPI).

The EPI is an Africa-led response to the killing of elephants. The organisation helps member countries conserve their elephants and secure the livelihoods of people who live alongside them.

In a statement on their website, the EPI said Ikeazor — formerly the minister of state for the environment — is a dedicated and effective advocate and campaigner for the environment and wildlife conservation.

The organisation said Ikeazor’s experience and expertise will be invaluable to the EPI Foundation.

“The Elephant Protection Initiative (EPI) Foundation is delighted to announce that Nigeria’s Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs, Honourable Sharon Ikeazor, has accepted an invitation from the Foundation’s Board to join its Leadership Council,” the statement reads.

John Scanlon, EPI CEO, said: “Sharon Ikeazor is universally recognised as a dedicated and highly effective minister, advocate and campaigner for the environment and wildlife conservation, both in Nigeria and at the international level.

“She has enjoyed a distinguished career, and her vast expertise and inspiring vision will be invaluable to the EPI Foundation.”

In her response, Ikeazor said: “This is an exciting opportunity for me to help steer wildlife conservation policy from within a unique alliance of African countries.

“The EPI is dedicated to conserving elephants and ensuring a better future for people who live near them, and I wholeheartedly share those objectives.”

Other members of the leadership council are Ian Khama, former President of Botswana; Fatima Maada Bio, First Lady of Sierra Leone; Margaret Kenyatta, former First Lady of Kenya; Hailemariam Desalegn, former Prime Minister of Ethiopia; and Lee White, Gabon’s minister of forests, oceans, environment and climate change.
