Royal Dutch Shell says it will take another “hard look” at its operations in Nigeria because of the challenges posed by saboteurs, Reuters is reporting.

Ben van Beurden, Shell chief executive officer, told journalists on Thursday that the company has continuously faced problems with thieves and saboteurs.

“Our onshore oil position, despite all the efforts we put in against theft and sabotage, is under challenge,” van Beurden said adding that it is now a headache for the company.

According to the CEO, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), its Nigerian onshore joint venture, has sold 50 percent of its oil assets over the past decade.

“Developments, like we are still seeing at the moment, means that we have to take another hard look at our position in onshore oil in Nigeria,” he said.

On Friday, a Dutch appeal court ruled that the Nigerian arm of Royal Dutch Shell pay for damages caused by oil spills in the Niger Delta.

Shell argued in court that the leaks were caused by saboteurs.

However, the court ruled that the oil company did not prove beyond reasonable doubts that other parties were responsible for the leaks rather than poor maintenance.
