Ali Modu Sheriff, chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says it is only God who chooses a leader.

According to THISDAY, Sheriff said this in Jalingo, capital of Taraba state, while fielding questions from reporters.

“It is God who crowns leaders. My own is to do the right thing and sell myself to members of our party. With God on our side, I’m confident that our people will give me the mandate to lead them at this point in time,” he was quoted as saying.

Sheriff’s statement is coming at a time when there is an internal crisis tearing at the heart of his party.

He was said to be responding to questions on why he left the All Progressives Congress (APC), which he co-founded, having served his two terms as Borno state governor under the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), which formed the merger that produced the ruling party.

Sheriff reportedly told journalists that he left APC due to developments that were not in tandem with his political beliefs and ideology.

He said he contributed immensely to the growth of the APC, saying his contributions to the success of the ruling party cannot be over emphasised.

Currently, the PDP is divided, as a group led by Jerry Gana, former minister of information, has asked Sheriff to quit office.

The group, which issued a communiqué at the end of a meeting it held in Abuja on Thursday, declared the party’s forthcoming national convention at Port Harcourt, Rivers state capital, as null and void.

The communiqué also stated that a 21-man committee has been inaugurated to preside over the affairs of the PDP in the interim.
