Shettima returns to Nigeria after attending 79th UNGA in US

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after attending the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, US.

Shettima represented President Bola Tinubu at the event and presented Nigeria’s national statement at the general debate.

While delivering Nigeria’s statement, Tinubu sought for debt forgiveness for Nigeria.

“Similarly, we must ensure that any reform of the international financial system includes comprehensive debt relief measures, to enable sustainable financing for development,” he had said.

“Countries of the global South cannot make meaningful economic progress without special concessions and a review of their current debt burden.”

In a statement on Sunday, Stanley Nkwocha, the vice-president’s spokesperson, said Shettima attended “several bilateral meetings and numerous sideline events at the general assembly”.

“He will proceed to join President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to mark some events put together as part of activities commemorating Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary,” Nkwocha said.
