Qasim Umar, a Sheik and leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), says the Sokoto government is yet to compensate its members for the damage done to them by the police.

In a statement on Tuesday, Ibrahim Musa, spokesman of the IMN, quoted him to have said this when the Sokoto state police commissioner paid him a visit at his residence.

Recounting how IMN members had suffered from police brutality, Umar said: “We are still awaiting the payment of compensation by the state government after the courts discharged and acquitted us of all charges and awarded us compensation for damages done to us.”

He further denied any plan by the Shi’ites to hold a ‘Grand African Shi’ah Congress’ in Sokoto, which the police commissioner said could cause a breach of peace in the state.

The statement further added that the news of the police commissioner’s visit was greeted with apprehension by the Shi’ites because Tukur Buratai, chief of army staff, at a recent visit to Aminu Tambuwal, governor of Sokoto state, had announced the establishment of a new army division to enhance security in the zone.
