Protesting Shi’ites storm Kano streets

Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, also known as Shi’ites or Shia, on Monday stormed the streets of Kano to demand the release of their leader, Ibrahim Zakzaky, and others in detention.

Since the face-off with Nigerian soldiers two weeks ago, Zakzaky has been under arrest.

Dozens of Shi’ites were killed allegedly by the troops.

The Shi’ites converged on Fagge Mosque in Kano before holding a procession on Ibrahim Taiwo Road, Radio Kano by Obasanjo Bridge and IBB Way.

They carried placards demanding the release of their leader during the three-hour procession.

Sani Malfa, leader of the protesters, told the crowd  at Kofar Mata that Zakzaky must be released so that he can be treated by his doctors following injuries he sustained in the face-off.

“We demand the immediate release of Sheik Zakzaky. And we want him to be released for him to be treated by the doctor of his choice for the injuries he sustained,” he said.

“We members of the Islamic Movement hereby also urge the immediate release of the bodies of those killed and those in detention without any condition.

“We are also calling on the authorities to allow us see Shiek Zakzaky for us to know his condition first-hand.”

The protesters asked international human rights groups to intervene over the “massacre” of the Shi’ites in Zaria.

They promised to continue the protest until all detainees are released.
