Shimon Peres, former Israeli president and Nobel winner, dies at 93

Shimon Peres, a prominent figure in Israel’s political landscape, has died at the age of 93.

Peres who suffered a stroke two weeks ago, served twice as Israel’s prime minister and once as president.

Following the major stroke he had on September 13, Peres was placed in the intensive care unit of Sheba Medical Centre.

In the presence of his family, Peres died in a hospital near Tel Aviv in the early hours of Wednesday.

His condition was said to have improved after the stroke; it however, deteriorated before he gave up the ghost.

“With great sadness we part from one of Israel’s great leaders President Peres- a man who devoted his life to serving his country & the world”, said a message from his official Twitter handle.

Peres’ funeral will be held at Mount Herzl, Israel’s national cemetery in Jerusalem.

The late statesman is regarded as one of the founding fathers of Israel, having served in many capacities.

He won the Nobel Peace prize in 1994 for helping to negotiate peace accords in Palestine.
