Shina Peller, a former member of the house of representatives, says the federal government must craft policies that will support local manufacturers of furniture and textile.
Peller spoke on Wednesday at an exhibition for furniture and textile in Lagos state.
The former lawmaker said effective policy-making is key to driving sectoral growth.
“Policies must be crafted to support local manufacturers, attract investments, and ensure fair competition,” he said.

Martins Arebun, president of MindShift Empowerment and Employment Initiative (MEEI), said the furniture and textile sectors of the economy contribute significantly to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).
Arebun said while Turkiye is one of the top global exporters of textiles and accounts for over 3.5 percent global export, Nigeria, South Africa and Ethiopia are leaders in the production of cotton and wool.
“Nigeria’s furniture market is valued at over $2 billion and it is growing annually with a potential for over 300 percent growth in the next three years,” he said.

On his part, Daniel Ayodele, founder of MEEI, said the country needs “cohesive policies that would foster development, incentivise innovation” in these sectors.
“The furniture industry has seen local artisans produce unique, culturally relevant pieces that reflect the rich heritage of our nation.
“First and foremost, effective policy-making is paramount in driving growth within the furniture and textile sectors.”
