A tanker conveying petrol exploded in Akure, Ondo state capital, on Wednesday, destroying shops and many vehicles.

The incident happened at the busy Onyaerugbulem junction, along Akure-Owo expressway.

It is unclear if any life was lost in the incident.

A witness said the petrol-laden tanker was coming from Lagos and skidded at the junction.

“The tanker was coming from Lagos and you know this junction in always busy. A Toyota SUV was approaching from the Orange FM road and in the process of trying to apply brake, the container fell on the vehicle and caught fire,” he said.

”From what I can see here, people got burnt in the fire and you know it is difficult to see now when the fire is still on.“

Vehicles plying that route have been forced to make use of alternative routes.
