Simon Stiell: Strong climate plans will boost Nigeria’s economy, improve access to clean energy

Simon Stiell, executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), says a strong national climate plan can supercharge the Nigerian economy with green growth and sustainable development.

Speaking on Thursday in Lagos during a symposium titled ‘Intersecting Worlds of Climate Change, Mangrove, and Art’, as part of activities to mark his official visit to Nigeria, Stiell said climate action will not only avert disastrous impacts of global warming but also provide access to clean energy for millions of Nigerians.

“Excellencies, distinguished guests, friends, I would like to start by thanking Dr Nkiruka Maduekwe for this wonderful invitation,” Stiell said.

“Climate action is not just about averting the disastrous impacts of global heating — which the best science and analysis now show can wipe up to 5% off GDP and decimate nature.

“It can be the gateway to a new Nigerian era of growth and prosperity, fueled by clean and affordable energy, available to all.”

The UN chief noted that countries that will reap the benefits of the $2 trillion global boom in clean energy are “those that invest in their people and their strengths.”

Stiell added that efforts are in place to ensure that Nigeria and other countries alike access more climate finance in order to help them adapt to the impact of extreme weather effects.

“But of course, this is not possible without finance. And that was mentioned earlier. And it would be unfair to expect Nigeria to act alone,” Stiell added.

”We must ensure that Nigeria and countries like it can access more finance from international climate funds sooner.”

Also speaking, Vice-President Kashim Shettima described the event as timely, noting that everyone stands at the confluence of three worlds — the world of climate change policy, mangrove ecosystems, and art and creativity.

Shettima, who was represented by Rukayat el- Rufai, special adviser to the president on the National Economic Council (NEC), added that climate change is not a distant threat as it affects everyone.
