Six girls rescued as police uncover ‘orphanage used as baby factory’ in Nasarawa

The Nasarawa police command says it has uncovered an orphanage used as a baby factory in Ado Kasa area of the state.

In a statement on Thursday, Ramhan Nansel, police spokesperson in Nasarawa, said the operatives attached to the area command in New Karu visited the orphanage following information received on the activities in the area.

Nansel said six adolescent girls and a baby were rescued from the factory.

“On 17/11/2022, at about 1400hrs, police detectives attached to area command, New Karu, acting based on a tip-off, bust a suspected baby factory located at Ado Kasa and rescued six young girls and a baby of about six months at St. Bridget Orphanage Home being operated by one Eze Ezeogu Norbert ‘M’ of New Karu and three others,” the statement reads.

“Consequently, the following suspects were arrested: Eze Ezeogu Norbert ‘M’, Nnaemeka Eze ‘F’, Okechukwu Ogechi ‘F’ and Obiagheli Chidi ‘F’.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the operator of the orphanage home abducted underaged pregnant girls, held them hostage till they give birth, and sold their children to the highest bidder.

“Further investigation also revealed that the orphanage home was not registered.

“Suspects and victims have been handed over to National Agency for the Prosecution of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigation and prosecution.”

Maiyaki Baba, commissioner of police in Nasarawa, warned members of the public against engaging in activities that undermine the safety of the people, adding that the command will continue to mobilise resources to eliminate criminal operations in the state.
