Sokoto announces 11 new cases — after discharging all active COVID-19 patients

The Sokoto task force on COVID-19 has announced 11 new cases, hours after the last five active cases in the state were discharged.

The state’s task force disclosed this in a statement on Saturday.

TheCable had earlier reported that Ali Inname, Sokoto commissioner of health, said between April 19 and May 23, the state confirmed 115 cases of the virus, and as of Friday, all the patients at the isolation centre had been discharged.

However, on Saturday, out of 33 almajiri children repatriated to the state from Kaduna, 11 tested positive for the coronavirus.

“Sokoto State task force on COVID-19 received 33 repatriated almajiris on 4th June, 2020 from Zaria, Kaduna State,” the tweet read.

“All the 33 almajiris are currently quarantined at the state NYSC orientation camp, Wamakko.

“On their date of arrival, all their samples were collected. Unfortunately, 11 out of 33 samples collected tested POSITIVE for COVID-19.

“The public, particularly Sokoto State people, should note that these almajiris had no known contact with their families.”

It also added that the Sokoto state government will collaborate with its Kaduna counterpart to ensure effective contact tracing at the almajiri school in Zaria where the children came from.

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), as of Friday, Sokoto had also recorded 14 COVID-19 deaths.
