Sokoto women seek 35 percent representation from Tambuwal

A women’s group has urged Aminu Tambuwal, speaker of the house of representatives and All Progressives Congress gubernatorial candidate in Sokoto state, to ensure that women get at least 35 percent of all appointments in government if his party emerges victorious at the February 28 gubernatorial election.

The group, Women for Change, noted that significant progress had been made in Sokoto in the past few years in the areas of women empowerment, girl child education and maternal mortality rates.

Turai Shehu, spokesperson of the group, observed that with the support of the state government, the number of girls enrolling in schools in rural areas in the state had quadrupled.

She added that the momentum could only be maintained if the incoming administration showed interest and commitment to the issue.

Responding, Tambuwal commended the women for their concern for the girl child, urging them to double their efforts and ensure that women were adequately mobilised to participate in the political process.

He promised that women would be given their rightful place in the scheme of things.

The speaker also appealed to them to ensure that the forthcoming elections were peaceful.
