Soldiers ‘kill insurgents fleeing from Sambisa’

‎Soldiers of the 26th task force brigade in Gwoza, Borno state, have cut down Boko Haram insurgents fleeing‎ Sambisa forest, the Nigeria army said on Wednesday.

The army said the insurgents fled due to the continued aerial bombardment by the Nigeria air force.

“The fleeing terrorists in seven pick up vans and some motorcycles mounted with assorted weapons such as rocket propelled grenades and anti-aircraft guns were decisively dealt with, killing quite a number of them,” it said.

“The troops also destroyed their vehicles, weapons and motorcycles. They also recovered a vehicle, one motorcycle and two AK47 rifles and large quantities of 7.62mm NATO and 12.7mm ammunitions.

“The troops have intensified their patrols and offensive actions against the terrorists in the area.”

The army’s statement is coming a day after reports of a massacre in Yobe state, reports claiming that as many as 150 were shot dead or drowned in a river in Kukuwa-Gari.

But the army has denied the reports, saying they “cannot be unsubstantiated’’.
