Soludo: Conspiracy of silence aiding crimes in Anambra — we must speak against it

Chukwuma Soludo, governor of Anambra, says the “conspiracy of silence” among residents is responsible for rising insecurity such as kidnappings for ransom and ritual killings in the state.

Since June 2021, after the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and the establishment of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), insecurity in the south-east, particularly in Anambra state, has intensified.

The ESN has been accused of involvement in abductions, killings, and communal clashes, alongside enforcing a Monday sit-at-home order across the region.

Speaking on Wednesday in Awka, the state capital, Soludo said tackling insecurity requires a joint effort between citizens and security agencies.

The governor also inspected the guard of honour and laid wreaths to commemorate the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

“We all need to rise up and speak against what can be described as a conspiracy of silence by the people, which appears to be fuelling criminal activities, including kidnapping for ransom,” NAN quoted Soludo as saying.

“These criminals are known, and they live among us; they are people’s husbands, brothers, fathers, and relatives.

“Combating insecurity is a collective responsibility. If you see something, say something, to help our security agencies keep us safe.

“Our administration is committed to supporting our security agencies to do their utmost best in securing the state.”

Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an annual event marked on the 15th of January to commemorate the nation’s fallen heroes as well as honour the living veterans.

Soludo paid tribute to fallen heroes, acknowledging their sacrifices for national freedom and security, and called for support for serving personnel nationwide.

“Anambra appreciates the sacrifices of our security personnel who put their lives on the line to secure the state, enduring all manners of horrendous conditions,” he said.

“We pray that the labour and sacrifices of our fallen heroes will not go in vain but keep us united and strong as a nation.”

The governor also released pigeons symbolising peace and prosperity, followed by a moment of silence and 21-gun salutes to honour the fallen heroes.
