Son succeeds father as Emir of Gombe

Alhaji Abubakar Shehu-Abubakar, son of the late Emir of Gombe who died on May 27, 2014, at a London hospital, has been appointed the new Emir of Gombe.

The late former emir, Alhaji Shehu Abubakar, also succeeded his own late father as the 10th Emir of Gombe in 1984.

Alhaji Abubakar Bage, secretary to the state government, presented the letter of appointment to the new emir at the Gombe Central Mosque on Friday.

Shehu-Abubakar, who until his appointment was the Santurakin Gombe, will be coronated as the 11th Emir of Gombe.

Bage revealed that Governor of the state, Ibrahim Dankwambo had to reconstitute the council of kingmakers of the emirate to choose a new king.

“The emirate kingmaker submitted the names of three candidates to the government out of 10 applicants to the throne,” he said.

“After consultations with stakeholders, the appointment of Shehu-Abubakar was approved.”

Born on December 17, 1977, in Gombe town, the new emir attended Gombe Children Primary School, Gombe, between 1982 and 1988; and Government Science Secondary School, Gombe, between 1989 and 1995.

He attended the University of Maiduguri from 2001 to 2005 where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science.

Shehu-Abubakar was a Supervisory Councillor in the Gombe Local Government Council between 2006 and 2007.
