Wole Soyinka, a Nigerian professor and Nobel Laureate, says he is embarrassed to be in the same country as “imbeciles and morons”.

Soyinka said this on Monday while analysing the reaction of Nigerians to his threat to tear his green card, after Donald Trump emerged the US president-elect.

While speaking at a media parley at Freedom Park, Soyinka said he was planning his own Wolexit, an adaptation of Brexit.

“Why do Nigerians wail louder than the bereaved?” he asked.

“I am embarrassed to occupy the same nation space as some imbeciles and morons.  I am planning my Wolexit, which could be internal or external.

“On the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration, I will have a private funeral keep to mourn the death of Nigeria’s common sense. If the board agrees (because I do not like to be authoritarian) I will move the residency of my foundation out of the country. “

  1. This Soyinka is not the same Soyinka the Kongi we know. His utterances of recent are below expectations. Maybe he is infected with this APC/Buhari sickness.

    1. Dunu, I agree with you totally, his utterances of recent leaves much to be desired. This is a man that some of us look on to for positive contribution to Nigeria myriad of problems, is obsessed with American internal affairs while Nigerians are dying under crushing economic problems occasioned by mindless looting of our common wealth.

If I may ask, what is the worth of Soyinka’s investment in estate, finance and manufacturing concerns in the US that he is behaving and talking strangely?

      1. @ Tunde Oso it’s bcos WS is a role model the he is to watch his words, why going public to say he will treat his green card if it’s a private Affair? Simple admitting to his mistake could have brought this issue to and end We understand he may have made that utterance out of political miscalculation

  2. Dunu, Izzy and Co., have you people followed the harsh criticism of him of recent? Even people not as old as his children, half literates (which one knows by their awkward arguments) attacked him over what in the real sense was a private decision (to throw away his U.S. Green Card) after Donald Trump won. Why should such a decision attract such bitterness from some people as to descend on him in such a vicious manner? It still baffles me. So, his present reaction is, I guess his frustration. In a decent clime, W.S. is a role model. Still, to a great number of Nigerians, W.S. remains a role model., though

    1. If it was a private decision, he should have kept it private. He didn’t have to tell the world. If he still decides
not to tear it nobody can do anything but talk. Eventually the matter will be forgotten.

  3. Wole have started talking to nigerians like his co-travellers in a.p.c It’s appauling that he has lost it.this man should hide his head in shame for being part of the people that put nigerians in this government of disastrous change.

  4. He is not happy because people attacked him in which he could not omit what he said. Another day, he will think twice before talking.

  5. Haba Uncle Wolexit! I respect you o. But Describing fellow humans/Nigerians as moroons & imbeciles is not good. Silence would have been better.

  6. Your comment..trump condemns leaders of our Nation for looting and playing games with money that would industrialise our economy. Excessive dependence on import while leaders with fancy ego frustrate indigen creative activities to enable mono area crowing cocks. The bitter truth of Trump stand vindicated when Nigeria shall join global industrial union aided by Trump. America aided Japan. Trump should be followed contextually. Wisdom denounces empty arrogance .
