Non-essential workers were allowed to resume duty in Spain on Monday, following the relaxation of the lockdown ordered in the country two weeks ago.

Spain has recorded 280 new deaths from COVID-19 complications as the downward fatality trend in the country continues.

The latest casualty figures show the country’s fatality rate has continued to decrease since April 2, when 950 deaths were recorded.

According to the Spanish government, 2,665 new cases of the coronavirus were also recorded in the last 24 hours.

This brings to 169,496 the total number of infections in the country which is the third worst hit in terms of fatalities globally.

At least 17,489 have now died from COVID-19 complications while 64,727 have so far recovered in Spain.

There are also reports the country has started relaxing the curfew in place following a state of emergency declared about one month ago.

A restriction that prevented non-essential workers from leaving their homes has been partially lifted as various workers, including those from the construction and manufacturing sectors, were among those allowed to return to their workplaces.

Globally, coronavirus cases have so far reached 1,906,428 while 118,472 deaths have been recorded.

About 440,153 have, however, recovered from the disease.
