Ikeme’s saves help Super Eagles to stalemate

Sunday Oliseh began his Super Eagles coaching job with a goalless draw against the Taifa Stars of Tanzania in Dar es Salaam on Saturday.

Debutant goalkeeper Carl Ikeme was in great form as he helped Nigeria to a 0-0 draw in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper made several saves to prevent the Eagles from suffering a humiliating defeat and denying the Taifa Stars a chance to take maximum points.

Without Odion Ighalo and Gbolahan Salami, the goal scorers in the 2-0 win over Chad in their previous game, the Emmanuel Emenike-led frontline failed to break down Tanzania’s well-drilled defence.

The Super Eagles are now top of the qualifying group with four points from two matches but Egypt, who defeated Tanzania 3-0 in their opening game, could leapfrog the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner if they avoid defeat away to Chad on Sunday.
