The death of Nwabali’s father happened a few hours after the goalkeeper was in goal for the Eagles in their 1-1 draw against the Benin Republic in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification match.

Nigeria qualified for the 2025 AFCON a few minutes before the game after Libya defeated Rwanda in the group’s other game.

Nwabali’s teammates in the Super Eagles sent the goalkeeper commiseration messages over his loss.

William Troost-Ekong, Victor Boniface, Moses Simon, and Amas Obasogie are among those who have posted condolences on social media.

Nwabali broke into the Super Eagles’ first team in early 2024. The Chippa United goalkeeper was named the team’s first-choice by Jose Peseiro, former Eagles head coach, ahead of the AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.

His performance in the competition made him a fan favourite in the team. He was named the man-of-the-match in the semi-final against South Africa after saving two penalties in the shootout that sent Nigeria to the final.

Nwabali is a nominee for the 2024 CAF goalkeeper of the year award.
