Gastroenteritis, also known as stomach flu, has killed 16 more people within one week in Sokoto state.

Ali Inname, Sokoto commissioner for heath, confirmed the development on Sunday, while giving an update on the outbreak in the state.

Gastroenteritis, also called stomach flu, is a disease triggered by bacteria, viruses, or parasites, which cause inflammation of the digestive system.

As of August 3, the death toll stood at 23, while cases had been recorded in 13 LGAs in the state.

But according to Inname, the outbreak has extended to 18 out of the 23 LGAs in the state.

He listed Yabo, Dange/Shuni and Gwadabawa LGAs as areas that had recorded continuous active cases of the infection, adding that the case count in comunities where cases were initially reported has reduced.

The commissioner also noted that the ministry has constituted three rapid response teams to reach areas where infections have been recorded, adding that a statewide immunisation against gastroenteritis is being conducted.

“Scientifically, this problem may not completely abate until the current raining season subsides,” he said.

“So, there is the need for the people of the state to continue to ensure personal and environmental hygiene, as well as heed to all medical advice issued by the health professionals.”
