Sultan declares July 7 as start of Islamic new year

Muhammad Abubakar Sa’ad, president of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), has declared Sunday, July 7, as the start of the Islamic new year — 1446 AH.

In a press release on Saturday, Sambo Junaidu, the chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs to the Sultanate Council, said the committee, alongside the National Moon Sighting Committee, did not receive any report of a new moon across the country.

He stated that Saturday, July 6, is the 30th of Zulhijja 1445 AH.

He added that the sultan accepted the report and declared Sunday as the first day of Muharram 1446 AH.

“The Sultan felicitates with the Nigerian Muslim Ummah and wishes them Allah’s guidance and blessings,” he said.

He urged the Muslim Ummah to continue to pray for peace, progress, and development of the country while wishing all Muslims a happy new year.
