American support for Nigeria won’t affect us, says Australia

Reporting-from-

Australia defender, Steph Catley, says the Matildas won’t be bothered by the jeers from about 33, 000 American fans who will be backing Nigeria when both sides meet on Friday.

The Australians could find themselves booed by the majority of fans inside the Winnipeg Stadium on June 12 after feuds with the USA marred the aftermath of the 3-1 loss on Monday.

The USA will play Sweden in the first match of the day and the majority of fans, who are expected to be travelling Americans, will support the Super Falcons in the second match at the expense of the Matildas.

The rivalry between Australia and USA was sparked by an article that appeared on the Football Federation of Australia website which has provoked a fiery response from American media outlets.

The FFA criticised America’s style of play, labelling it “rudimentary, bog-standard 4-4-2” and “short of ideas going forward and outmanoeuvred tactically”.

The remarks soured relations with fans of USA who took offence to the statement and should they voice that disdain and support Nigeria, Catley says it will have little impact on them.

“You can always hope for a little bit more support on your side from the crowd, but I suppose when you play, especially myself, when I’m out there you sort of just play the game,” Catley said.

“The crowd doesn’t make a difference when you’re out there but if we could get as many supporters down as possible it will be awesome and if some Canadians want to come out and support us, that will be great too.”

The Super Falcons are second in the group after one round of games while Australia occupy the last position.
