Supreme court sacks Danladi, Taraba north senator

The supreme court has removed Sani Danladi as senator representing Taraba north.

The decision of the court followed an appeal filed by Shuaibu Lau challenging the decision of the court of appeal which upheld Danladi’s position as senator representing the district.

A panel of justices led by Walter Onnoghen, chief justice of Nigeria (CJN), on Friday, held that Lau should be the representative of the district at the senate because he had the highest number of votes in the senatorial primary election of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The court, therefore, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue a certificate of return to him.

“The appellant has the right to participate just like any other candidate in the primary election, and if he feels his right was infringed upon, he has the right to approach the court,” it ruled.

“And his substitution at the primary election is null and void since the appellant scored the highest number of votes, the only option is to declare the appellant as the winner of the primary.”

Danladi was deputy governor under Dantata Suntai, former governor of the state.
