Kwara speaker: Supreme court will strike out charges against Saraki

Ali Ahmad, speaker of the Kwara state house of assembly, says the pending charge against Senate President Bukola Saraki at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) will be struck out at the supreme court.

On Tuesday, the court of appeal held that Saraki’s trial at the CCT should continue.

The court struck out 15 out of the 18 charges which the federal government filed against him.

The CCT had acquitted Saraki, saying no strong case was established against him.

In a statement on Tuesday, Ahmad said the charges against Saraki “do not hold water”. He described the case as a distraction to the senate president.

The speaker urged Saraki to proceed to the apex court in the bid to clear his name of any wrongdoing.

Ahmad said Nigerians have by now lost interest in the matter “because looking back at the CCT prosecution, they now believe it was more of a circus than pursuit of ideals of justice.”

“The lawmaker firmly believes that the matter will be laid to rest at the apex court and allow the senate president to focus on his duties at the national assembly,” the statement read.
