Syrian president, wife contract COVID-19

President Bashar al-Assad of Syria and Asma, his wife, have tested positive for COVID-19.

The Syrian presidency disclosed their health status in a statement on Monday.

It said though they showed minor symptoms, both of them are in good health and would continue to work while in isolation at home.

“After experiencing mild symptoms that resemble… Covid-19, President al-Assad and first lady Asma Al-Assad took a PCR test, and the result showed that they are infected with the virus,” the presidency said in a statement.

“They are in good health and their condition is stable.”

Other world leaders who have contracted the infection include ex-President Donald Trump, Boris Johnson, British prime minister; Juan Orlando Hernández, president of Honduras, and Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s president.

Syria has 15,981 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 1,063 deaths.

In related developments, some countries are prioritising vaccinating their leaders and frontline health workers.

On Friday, Nigeria commenced its COVID-19 vaccination with frontline health workers in Abuja.

The first shot of the vaccine was given to Cyprian Ngong, a medical doctor at the National Hospital, Abuja.

President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo got their shots on Saturday.

There are currently about 24 million COVID-19 cases worldwide.
