Tambuwal wins Sokoto south senatorial seat

Aminu Tambuwal, governor of Sokoto, has been declared winner of the Sokoto south senatorial district election.

Abubakar Bagudu, the returning officer, who announced the results, said the governor garnered 100,860 votes to win the election.

Tambuwal defeated Danbaba Dambuwa, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 95,884 votes to lose his re-election bid.

With his victory, he joins the list of governors who have won senatorial seats in the 2023 election. Others are Dave Umahi of Ebonyi state and Abubakar Bello of Niger state.

Tambuwal was elected governor of Sokoto in 2015 and was re-elected in 2019.

The 57-year-old initially vied for the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but later stepped down for Atiku Abubakar.

At the time, he had announced the decision was for the “good of the party and the country”.

“What we have done is for the good of our party and the country. I appreciate every one of you that prayed for me and our party,” he had said.

“The sacrifice that I have made on your behalf is aimed at strengthening our party, our democracy, and; by the grace of God, soft landing our polity.

“This is in consonance with the teachings of our leaders and the emulation of the examples they have given to us in the past: that we must continue to make sacrifices for the good of all of us and our country.”
