Tension in Ondo as protesters barricade governor’s office over killing of farmers

Protest in Ondo

There is palpable tension in Ondo state, with protesters barricading the entrance to the governor’s office at Alagbaka, Akure, over the killing of five farmers by suspected herders.

The tragedy comes a week after four communities in Akure North LGA of the state were attacked by gunmen — an incident that reportedly led to the death of over 20 people, as well as the abduction of nine surveyors in Ilu-Abo.

In the latest incident, it was learnt that the farmers were allegedly shot dead after another invasion by armed herdsmen at Aba Oyinbo area, in Akure North LGA.

Angered by the unfortunate incident, the protesters stormed the governor’s office, displaying bodies of the casualties.

They chanted solidarity songs while imploring Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the state governor, to do the needful.

However, operatives of the police and the state’s security network code-named Amotekun, could be seen round the area and in other strategic locations in the state capital, in a bid to forestall the breakdown of law and order.

Commuters and motorists on Akure/Owo/Benin road are currently stranded following another mass protest in Ogbese over the spate of killings.
