TETFund to set up 72 specialised ICT centres in tertiary schools

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) says it plans to establish 72 new ICT centres in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across Nigeria.

Sonny Echono, TETFund’s executive secretary, spoke to NAN in Abuja on Thursday.

He said the project is intended to equip students with skills in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, robotics, and software development.

The ES said six specialised ICT hubs had already begun operations in February.

He said the additional 72 centres, expected to be inaugurated in 2025, will offer students hands-on training and improve their employability in the global job market.

“These days, nobody is looking at your BSc or PhD. They want to know your proficiency,” Echono said.

“Can you code? What talents do you have? These are the things employers are interested in.”

Echono said TETFund is prioritising technical vocational education and training (TVET) by investing in infrastructure and professional training.

He said this would help train electricians, welders, fabricators, and solar panel technicians, addressing Nigeria’s need for skilled artisans and boosting economic growth.

On research funding, Echono dismissed recent claims that private universities do not benefit from TETFund grants.

He stressed that research opportunities were open to all tertiary institutions and that private-sector scholars were encouraged to apply.

“Even if you are a non-Nigerian working on a solution to our problems, we are open to collaboration,” he said.

“Research funding is merit-based, and private university scholars are eligible for grants.”

The new ICT and vocational training initiatives, Echono added, are part of a broader effort to modernise Nigeria’s education system and align it with industry demands.
