The amiable Prince Bayero who lost to Sanusi

He loves reading, playing squash, travelling, farming and horse-riding ─ welcome to the world of Alhaji Lamido Sanusi Ado Bayero, who lost to Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi in the race for the emir of Kano.

The man addressed as Chiroman Kano (that is his traditional title) is not your typical Nigerian royal; he is on facebook.

Who knows, he could have even made his BB pin available to his subjects for easier pinging. This is the era of the modern kings who carry iPads and read news on their smart phones.

He joined facebook on March 9, 2011 and implored his followers to drop their messages in English for the sake of those who do not speak Hausa. He appears to be a bridge-builder.

He wrote: “I say Barka da zuwa to everyone… As long as I love your comments concerning Chiroman Kano, I will also appreciate it if you can translate your comments in English for the sake of people who are outside the Northern region and Nigeria who do not understand Hausa, since it is all about declaring a man of purpose and integrity to the world… Long live Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero… Thank you all.”

For a man who speaks four languages ─ English, French, Arabic and Hausa ─ fluently, he can afford to open four different facebook accounts if he wants.

His facebook profile reads thus: “He is the first child and Son of Emir of Kano – Alhaji (Dr.) Ado Bayero. Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero, a well known Philanthropist and a historical instrument of change. As a member of the Royal Family of the ancient City of Kano State, He understands that it is imperative to know the need to be an upright citizen of Great Nigeria which he is and a good example of subjects to follow.
