TheCable appoints Jude Egbas deputy editor, promotes senior editorial team members

TheCable, Nigeria’s independent online newspaper, has promoted three editorial team members to new leadership roles effective November 1, 2024.

Jude Egbas, Goodness Chibunna, and EbunOluwa Olafusi will take on expanded roles to further enrich the media organisation’s reporting and editorial scope.

Simon Kolawole, founder and chief executive officer of TheCable, praised the trio for the sterling contributions which earned them the promotion.

“TheCable is known to reward capacity and performance, and the three team members promoted to leadership positions have several attributes that align with the organisation’s vision and objectives,” Kolawole said.

EGBAS NAMED DEPUTY EDITOR

Egbas, who is moving from news editor to deputy editor, joined TheCable in May 2023 after spending years at Pulse Nigeria.

Since coming on board, Egbas has consistently demonstrated editorial rigour and a commitment to high-quality journalism.

As deputy editor, Egbas will now play a central role in editorial strategy, overseeing daily operations and working closely with Kolapo Olapoju, editor of TheCable.

“It has been an honour to work here. The company shares the values I have always admired in the media. TheCable is also like a training school. You don’t join this group and remain the same. To move up a rung for doing what you love doing is icing on a beautiful cake,” Egbas said.

CHIBUNNA SUCCEEDS EGBAS

Chibunna previously served as the assistant news editor.

With years of experience in Nigerian media and development sectors, Chibunna has brought a fresh perspective and vibrancy since joining TheCable.

In her new role, she will coordinate news coverage across all beats, ensuring timely, relevant, and insightful reporting.

“I am thrilled to accept the promotion to news editor. This recognition has not only energised me but has also strengthened my commitment to making impactful contributions in this new role,” Chibunna said.

“I appreciate the trust and confidence that the management has placed in me, and I am grateful for the consistent support that has guided my journey here.”

OLAFUSI IS HEAD OF FACT CHECK DESK

Olafusi has been at the forefront of TheCable’s fact-checking initiatives in recent years, serving as the acting head of the desk since March 2024.

Her leadership skills have significantly contributed to Cable Check’s efficiency in countering misinformation and disinformation during recent elections.

As head of the fact check desk, Olafusi will oversee a dedicated team of fact checkers working to tackle information disorder through various forms including local language reporting.

SHIBAYAN, NASIRU, ADE-RUFUS PROMOTED TO SENIOR ROLES

DyepKazah Shibayan, Jemilat Nasiru, and Adedayo Ade-Rufus were also promoted to senior positions.

Shibayan, previously a staff writer, was promoted to senior staff writer.

Shibayan has over 10 years of journalism experience and has contributed significantly to the expansion and robustness of TheCable’s political desk.

Nasir was promoted to staff writer, multimedia.

Nasir, a multimedia journalist, has led multiple productions including hosting podcasts and X Spaces for TheCable.

Ade-Rufus, who previously served as the SEO specialist, was promoted to senior SEO specialist.

Ade-Rufus’ commitment and dedication to ensuring TheCable’s visibility online was commended by the editorial board, earning him his promotion.
