Barack Obama, former US president, has congratulated Joe Biden, who is about to be sworn in as America’s 46th president.
Biden was Obama’s deputy between 2008 and 2016.
In a tweet on Wednesday, Obama described Biden as his friend, saying it is his time as president
“Congratulations to my friend, President @JoeBiden! This is your time,” Obama wrote.

At the time of filing this report, Biden and Kamala Harris, the vice-president elect, had not taken the oath of office.
Outgoing President Donald Trump has left the White House but he will not attend the inauguration.
However, Mike Pence, his deputy, is among the dignitaries at the Capitol Hill for the inauguration.
Other dignitaries are former Presidents Barrack Obama and wife; George Bush and wife; Bill Clinton and wife.
