Kayode Egbetokun, inspector-general of police, has ordered the posting of 54 assistant commissioners of police to head the intelligence units of zonal and state police commands.

Egbetokun said the posting is aimed at improving the effectiveness of intelligence units in curbing crime across the country.

In a statement on Tuesday, Muyiwa Adejobi, force public relations officer, said the posting of the senior officers takes immediate effect.

The IGP urged the newly appointed senior officers to deploy all the intelligence-based assets in their jurisdictions to combat crimes and criminality.

Egbetokun asked the officers to maintain professionalism and apply their wealth of experience to strengthen the intelligence architecture of the police force.

The development comes amid the recent spate of kidnappings in many parts of the country.

In September 2023, the IGP approved the upgrade of the force intelligence bureau to the status of a department. Thereafter, Habu Sanni, deputy inspector-general of police, was appointed head of the new department.
