TRENDING: Omawumi walks out of interview after ‘smoking’ question

Omawumi Megbele, Nigerian singer and songwriter, showed her intolerance for accusations after she walked out of an interview.

The 34-year old entertainer was a guest on ‘Da Chat’ show produced by HF TV and lost her temper after the interviewer asked her about her unconfirmed smoking and drinking habit.

Zinnia, the host, asked her: “There has been a controversy about you in the industry, I don’t think you know about it.

“People say she is a mother and it’s amazing because young girls want to be like her but she has this smoking and drinking habit, how does she keep that away from her kids?”

The question did not go down well with Omawumi as she visibly lost her temper and gave the host a piece of her mind.

“I won’t honour you with a response, I feel that it is a taint to my character. Have you seen me smoke before?” she asked the presenter who said she had not.

“Then why would you say that, have you seen me smoke before?

“Now you see me as an artiste, I contribute what I can; I produce music the way that I should and I come here and honour your invitation and then you sit down and talk about my smoking and drinking to people that are listening and you are supposed to mean me well.

“When these people are supposed to be the ones buying my music; now when you say that sort of thing, do you mean me well?

“You can not ask me to kill a rumour that you are not sure about, you have said it’s a rumour so you need to go and dig and get your facts right before you ask me.

“I maintain that if you have not seen me smoke and you come out and say it on national tv, it means that you don’t mean me well and that is the end of this interview.”

Saying that, Omawumi walked out and her parting words were: “And you will publish it o.”

After the Warri-born songstress left, the host admitted that the interview did not go as planned but maintained that she meant no harm to Omawumi.

  1. This young artist have just bungled it. As people rise in their chosen professions, careers and fields of endeavour, they ought equally to grow in the grace that are expected to accompany such achievements. In my opinion, almost every interview offers the interviewee a rare opportunity to address an important issue around them at the moment. ln this instance, this artist should have just looked intently into the cameras, smiled and addressed this rumour herself. That was a golden moment she just lost. This incident if true, continues to underscore the need for mentoring and professional handling for a good number of our ‘stars’. Especially since a star is supposed to shine, attract attention and even followership. Otherwise the upcoming ones might even begin to erronously assume that being a star is synonymous with behaving the way one likes. Meanwhile being a star is meant to be a serious business and a huge responsibility. Just food for thought.

  2. Nnaji, you said it all. In fact she acted like: ‘this woman just blew openmy secret and it’s rumour am managing quietly. She actually behaved like a smoker and drinker. She should get trained on public relations.

  3. She acted very immature.omawumi should have just answered the question.but as it is I think she does both,! !
