Ovie Omo-Agege, senator representing Delta central, on Tuesday, knelt down to greet President Muhammadu Buhari after his emergence as deputy senate president.
Omo-Agege had secured 68 votes during the senate election to defeat Ike Ekweremadu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and immediate past occupier of the position, who had 37 votes.
While paying a courtesy visit to the presidential villa, alongside Ahmad Lawan, the newly elected senate president, the lawmaker, who could not hide his excitement, went down on his knees while shaking Buhari.

Pictures and videos of the incident have since gone viral on social media platforms, and were greeted with backlashes.
While some said the senator “stooped too low” for his new position others commended his action.
When we have a Deputy Senate President KNEELING DOWN to greet @MBuhari, how can we expect the 9th National Assembly to STAND UP to him? The Legislature was created to CHECK the Executive, not to BOW to them. Kneel to God and parents only. Very sad! #FreeLeahSharibu #RenosDarts pic.twitter.com/81rivi5YtV

My Isoko/Urhobo people, is it cultural for you to kneel down to greet an elderly person in the manner Ovie Omo-Agege greeted Buhari yesterday?

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had endorsed Omo-Agege as Lawan’s deputy.
Omo-Agege made news in April 2018, when the mace was stolen by suspected hoodlums during plenary.
The senator was alleged to have led thugs to hijack the mace, an allegation he denied.
