Truck crushes 13-year-old to death in Borno

Tragedy struck in the Gwange area of Maiduguri, Borno state capital, on Tuesday as Nura Mohammed, a 13-year-old boy, was crushed by a truck.

The tragic incident occurred at New GRA junction, opposite the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat in the state.

A witness said Mohammed, who was riding a bicycle, did not see the oncoming vehicle when he attempted to cross over to the other lane of the road.

He was said to have died on the spot.

The driver of the truck fled to a nearby police station to avoid the wrath of residents.

Mustapha Modu, a resident, narrated what happened to TheCable.

“The incident happened around 12pm. The boy was at the junction and wanted cross to the other lane but he did not take note of the oncoming vehicle on the other lane,” he said.

“Unfortunately, when he was about crossing, the truck driver, who was on high speed, hit him and he died on the spot.

“The driver and another occupant of the truck fled out of the fear of being assaulted. But for the intervention of some elders, the truck would have been vandalised.”

A patrol vehicle of the police later arrived the scene and took the body of the deceased to the morgue of University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, UMTH.

He was buried around 3pm.
