Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, minister of interior, has ordered an immediate investigation into the feeding conditions of inmates at the Afokang Custodial Centre in Calabar, Cross River.
Tunji-Ojo’s order was in reaction to a viral Saturday post on Facebook alleging an inhumane treatment of inmates.
The post, which was accompanied by pictures and a video, claimed that the situation at the prison is deteriorating, with inmates served raw beans for breakfast.
“This is beans for breakfast. You can notice that the beans is even still raw. This was (their) breakfast yesterday,” the post reads.

“This is what is served to human beings that are presumed innocent until proven guilty.”
A statement by Babatunde Alao, the minister’s media aide, on Sunday, said Tunji-Ojo had taken grave exception to the disturbing video report.
“The Minister views this incident as a serious breach of the standards of care and dignity to which inmates are entitled,” the statement said.

“He has directed a comprehensive and urgent investigation into this matter, and those responsible will be held accountable.”
The minister also warned that any lapses in the quality of food, sanitation, and welfare of inmates would not be tolerated.
Tunji-Ojo assured that findings of the investigation would be made public, and necessary disciplinary actions would be taken.
