Two members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Kano state have tested positive for coronavirus.

According to NAN, Hajiya Tata, NYSC coordinator in the state, disclosed this in an interactive session with journalists on Monday.

Tata said 826 corps members posted to the state underwent COVID-19 test before they were allowed into the orientation camp.

“As you have seen, we have provided all the necessary prevention facilities and ensured that all the corps members used them,” she said.

“We have also ensured comprehensive fumigation to ensure that the camp remains a clean environment for the corps members.”

In a related development, Walida Isa, NYSC coordinator in the federal capital territory (FCT), said five prospective corps members have tested positive for COVID-19.

Isa made the disclosure at the swearing-in ceremony the 2020 Batch b stream 1 corps members on Monday in Abuja.

She said a total of 858 corps members were tested for COVID-19, out of which five were confirmed positive.

“The five that were positive were taken to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) for treatment. So, they are not among the number we registered,’’ she said.

The 2020 batch B stream 1 corps members resumed at the orientation camp on November 10.

NYSC camps nationwide have been closed for months as part of measures introduced to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

However, as the federal government slowed the restrictions, the NYSC reopened the camps after due consultation with the NCDC.

When the camps were reopened, the NYSC had said protocols are in place to keep corps members safe from the virus, including compulsory testing and wearing of face masks.
