Two dead, 18 rescued in Jigawa boat mishap

Two persons have died in a boat accident in Jigawa state.

The Jigawa police command said the mishap occurred in Kwalgai village, Auyo LGA of the state, on July 7. 

Lawan Shiisu, the command’s spokesperson, described the incident as “tragic and unfortunate”.

“Preliminary reports indicated that the canoe capsized while traveling from Kwalgai to Hadin village within the same LGA, with about 20 passengers on board,” he said.

“Eighteen passengers were rescued alive, while two females went missing.

“Subsequently, today at about 6 a:m., the body of one of the missing female passengers identified as Habiba Ado of Kwalgai village was recovered.

“The victim, aged 18, was quickly conveyed to Auyo Hospital but was confirmed dead by a medical doctor on duty.

“Efforts are ongoing to recover the second missing passenger.

“The incident was primarily caused by powerful waves and overloading, making it difficult for the driver to steer the canoe.”

Shiisu said the survivors have been hospitalised.

He assured the public of intensified efforts to ensure safer waterway travels in the region.
