‘Two gunmen killed’ as police repel attack on vigilante camp in Anambra

The police command in Anambra said two suspected gunmen were killed while operatives were repelling an attack on a vigilante camp in Okija, Ihiala LGA of the state.

According to NAN, about 15 armed men were said to have attacked the vigilante camp in the early hours of Monday.

The gunmen were reportedly intercepted by security agents who engaged them in a gun battle.

The police team killed two of the gunmen and recovered two AK-47 riffles.

“Two of the gunmen were gunned down during an exchange of fire and two AK-47 riffles were recovered, while many fled the scene,” NAN quoted a source as saying.

“Many of the gunmen who fled as they could not withstand the superior firepower of the security operatives sustained various degrees of injuries and bullet wounds.”

Confirming the incident, Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesman, said no casualty was recorded on the part of the vigilante operatives.

He said a joint security team was searching the area to arrest fleeing gunmen, adding that private and public hospitals should report any patient with bullet wounds.

In a statement by Christian Aburime, Chukwuma Soludo, the state governor, said his administration remains committed to saving and securing Anambra.

Soludo added that the security forces would continue to safeguard the lives and properties of travellers and residents of the state.
