Two killed, several injured in fire outbreak at Borno IDP camp

A fire outbreak at the Mandalari internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in Konduga, Borno state, has claimed at least two lives, leaving several others injured.

The fire reportedly started around 11:25 am on Friday, rapidly spreading through the overcrowded settlement and destroying makeshift shelters.

Security personnel, including the state fire service and troops stationed in Konduga, worked alongside emergency responders to contain the inferno and evacuate victims.

“The military provided immediate support, mobilising personnel and equipment to contain the fire while ensuring the safety of affected families,” a security source told TheCable.

The authorities at the camp have reportedly advised the IDPs to take extra precautions during the dry season.

The Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) also pledged to explore measures to prevent future fire incidents.

This is not the first time the Mandalari camp has recorded a fire incident. Between February and June 2024, the camp recorded at least 43 fire outbreaks.

In response to the frequent fire outbreaks, the local government chairman had previously acquired a fire truck to improve response capacity.
