Two Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members in the house of representatives have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the house, announced the defections on the floor of the lower legislative chamber on Wednesday.

The defectors are Ephraim Nwuzi, a lawmaker from Rivers, and David Abel, a lawmaker from Taraba.

Nwuzi and Abel represent Etche/Omuma federal constituency and Gashaka/Kurmi/Sardauna federal constituency respectively.

However, Toby Okechukwu, deputy minority leader and a PDP member, protested the defections.

While asking the speaker to declare their seats vacant, Okechukwu argued there is no crisis in his party — one of the reasons cited by Nwuzi and Abel.

But the Gbajabiamila dismissed his submission, describing members of the opposition party as “hypocrites”.
