Gunmen have attacked a police checkpoint in Enugu state.
TheCable understands that a shootout occurred between the policemen and a group of armed men on Thursday.
There are reports that two policemen died in the incident but TheCable has not been able to confirm the fatalities.
Daniel Ndukwe, the command’s spokesperson, told TheCable that the policemen were attacked during a “stop and search duty”.

He said the police are on the trail of the gunmen but that details of the incident are still “sketchy”.
“There was an attack on policemen on stop and search duty this morning, along Agbani Road, close to Enugu/Port-Harcourt Expressway, by yet-to-be-identified hoodlums,” Nduka said.
“However, details of the incident are still sketchy, while command’s tactical/operational operatives have been mobilised and are on the trail of the miscreants. Further developments will be communicated.”

When asked about the reported killing of the policemen, Nduka said: “When I have more details, I will tell you. There is an operation ongoing, so I can’t give you such information please.”

On June 4, TheCable reported that two officers from the state police command died from bullet wounds sustained in a duel with gunmen.
Also, four police officers were killed in another attack along Amaechi-Ekeotu-Agbani road in Enugu south LGA.
