Two sisters arraigned for ‘beating up policeman’

Two sisters – Favour AJula and Oluchi Ajula – were arraigned at an Ikeja magistrates’ court for allegedly assaulting a police inspector by tearing his uniform and dragging his gun.

Favour, a 24-year old hairdresser, and 18-year old Oluchi, a nurse, appeared before F.F. George, a magistrate, on a two-count charge of conspiracy and assault.

Godwin Awase, the prosecutor, told the court that the defendants commuted the offences on April 13, at their residence in Iju-Ishaga, Agege area in Lagos.

He told the court that the sisters, with a teenager, Emeka, assaulted Bitrus Zingkur, an inspector, while performing his lawful duty.

He said the issue started when a co-tenant, Uche Prince, reported the defendants that they were after his life. This prompted Zingkur to accompany him to the house.

When Zingkur tried to settle the disagreement, the sisters reportedly assaulted him.

The prosecutor said the offence contravene sections 174(b) and 411 of the criminal law of Lagos state, 2015.

The sections stipulates three years imprisonment for assaulting and also attracts two years jail term for conspiracy.

However, the sisters pleaded not guilty to the charges and were granted bail in the sum of N50,000 each with two sureties in like sum.

George ordered that the sureties should be gainfully employed and must show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos state government.

The case was adjourned till May 14 for mention.
